The Subaru Baja was Subaru’s attempt to blend a wagon and a pickup into one quirky package. Based on the Subaru Outback, it kept the familiar car-like platform and added a tiny open pickup bed behind the rear seats. Sold from 2003 to 2006, it came with Subaru’s standard all wheel drive and either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged flat four engine. The Baja even had a clever “Switchback” pass-through that let longer cargo slide from the bed into the cabin.

In theory it sounded practical, but in reality it landed in a strange middle ground. The bed was too small for most truck buyers, and the design felt too truck-like for wagon fans who preferred the normal Subaru Outback. Buyers largely passed on it, and Subaru ended production after only a few years. Today the Baja survives as a cult favorite, remembered for being a fun idea that never quite fit any category.
