The Porsche 911 (Classic, 1964–1989) established the core layout that defined the model for decades, using a rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six with rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission. Early cars began with a 2.0L engine before progressing through larger 2.2L, 2.4L, and 2.7L engines, while later versions reached 3.0L and 3.2L displacement with electronic engine management and improved braking and suspension systems.

Across its development, the classic 911 retained the rear-engine layout, torsion-bar suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and lightweight construction while Porsche steadily increased engine output and chassis capability. The range eventually expanded to include performance variants such as the Carrera RS 2.7 and 930 Turbo, establishing the mechanical and design foundations that would carry the 911 into its later generations.
