The Mercedes-Benz R-Class was an unusual experiment by Mercedes-Benz, attempting to combine the comfort of a luxury sedan, the practicality of a minivan, and the stance of an SUV. Introduced in the mid-2000s, the R-Class had a long, tall body with three rows of seating, but instead of marketing it as a minivan, Mercedes described it as a “Grand Sports Tourer.” The design featured a long hood, a sloping roofline, and large rear doors, giving it the silhouette of a minivan that refused to admit it was one.
