The Fiat 500L was an unusual attempt by Fiat to stretch the charm of the small Fiat 500 into a practical family vehicle. Instead of the compact city-car proportions of the original, the 500L adopted a tall, bulbous MPV shape with a longer wheelbase and a much larger cabin. Designers tried to retain the friendly styling cues of the classic-inspired 500, including rounded headlights and soft curves, but scaling those elements up to minivan size gave the car some awkward and exaggerated proportions.

Inside, however, the 500L focused heavily on practicality. The tall body allowed for generous headroom, flexible seating, and large windows that created a bright, airy interior. It was meant to appeal to families who liked the personality of the 500 but needed more space than a small hatchback could provide. While the design proved divisive and never reached the popularity of its smaller sibling, the 500L stands as one of the more curious attempts to turn a retro-inspired city car into a compact people mover.
