The BMW 1-Series E82/E88 brought BMW's rear-wheel-drive layout into a compact platform, with North American models including the 128i's 3.0L naturally aspirated N52 inline-six and the 135i's 3.0L turbocharged N54 inline-six. Both were offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the chassis uses independent suspension, rear-wheel drive, four-wheel disc brakes, and near 50:50 weight distribution.
The 135i added stronger brakes, sport suspension, and the torque-rich N54 engine, while the later 1M Coupe used the same basic platform with substantially revised chassis and drivetrain hardware. Across the E82/E88 range, the compact dimensions, longitudinal engine layout, rear-wheel drive, and inline-six engines gave the 1-Series a distinctly mechanical character compared with many newer compact performance cars.
